Heavy Uncertainty

The sky is overcast. Grey clouds are looming over Reno, growing darker by the hour. Iâm not bothered by them. Nothing seems to be able to dampen my mood at the moment.
Itâs been over two weeks since I decided to stay and help Jules out and Iâve been surprisingly happy. Work is fun and Jules isâ¦
I glance at her, sitting in the passenger seat of Keithâs pickup and squeezing her hands together. Weâre heading to the hospital so she can get an ultrasound. The doctor recommended it when they met. Cassidy took her to that appointment. Jules was so nervous when they left that I ended up pacing around the bar, my list of jobs forgotten.
She returned with a timid smile though, and Cassidy relayed a bunch of details while we ate lunch together. Jules and the baby are both healthy.
Apparently this ultrasound today is just standard procedure to check on the babyâs vital organs. Last night, Cassidy asked me if I could take Jules to the hospital. I kind of didnât know how to reply at first, but I promised Iâd help Jules out any way I could and said yes before I thought too much about it. Cassidy and Keith are out of town today. Iâve borrowed Keithâs truck, since Jules doesnât do motorcycles, and Iâm trying to quell her nervous twitching with some upbeat country music. I donât think itâs really working.
Reaching across, I gently squeeze her hands. âItâs going to be okay. Itâs just an ultrasound.â
âI know.â Her voice always goes so soft and tiny when sheâs stressing.
Iâd love to know what sheâs thinking. The doctor told her they can probably determine the sex of the baby today. Maybe sheâs wondering about whether to find out or not. I nearly ask her but as we catch sight of the hospital, her entire body tenses.
âSo, Iâm thinking of having dinner at Skate Home tonight, before I walk you home.â I distract her. âWhat are you gonna cook me?â
Jules glances at me and blinks a couple of times. âItâs your day off. You donât want to eat there.â
âYeah, I do. Your foodâs the best. Iâd eat it every night of the week if I could.â I grin, loving the way her cheeks tint red whenever I give her a compliment.
âSo whatâs on the menu tonight?â I slow the truck and turn into the parking lot.
Julesâ eyes dart to the large white building and then back to me. âUmâ¦â
âPlease say ambrosia pie.â I wink.
She smiles and tucks her hair behind her ear. âOf course. That will definitely be on the menu.â
âI knew itâd be a crowd favorite.â
âI still canât believe how popular it is.â She shakes her head.
âYouâve tasted it, right?â
She giggles. âItâs different when youâve cooked it yourself.â
âNo, you just suck at taking a compliment.â
Her lips twitch as she dips her head and starts picking a loose thread on the edge of her jeans.
I park the truck as close to the entrance as I can. Jules takes her time getting out, nervously hovering by the bumper.
